Building resilience in the face of air quality challenges

The good news is our bodies are remarkably resilient and well-equipped to detoxify. The liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and gastrointestinal tract work around the clock to process and eliminate environmental chemicals.
A personalized approach begins by understanding individual biology. Certain genetic variants may influence detoxification capacity, but targeted lifestyle and supplementation strategies may help strengthen the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Laboratory testing can provide clues. Nutrient deficiencies—including vitamin D, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins—may impair detoxification pathways. Biomarkers such as glutathione status, omega-3 index and C-reactive protein may identify opportunities to bolster resilience.
Lifestyle remains the foundation. A colorful, Mediterranean-style eating pattern provides polyphenols and fiber that support the body’s antioxidant and microbiome defenses. Regular physical activity improves circulation and supports lymphatic function, while quality sleep allows the brain’s glymphatic system to remove metabolic waste. Adequate hydration helps healthy kidneys filter and excrete various toxins, as well. Breathing is another underappreciated detoxification tool. The lungs eliminate carbon dioxide and other volatile waste products with every exhalation. Slow diaphragmatic breathing through the nose with longer exhalations optimize ventilation while shifting the nervous system toward a calmer parasympathetic state. Nasal breathing also filters, humidifies and warms inhaled air while increasing nitric oxide production, which supports healthy blood flow and oxygen delivery. Even five minutes of relaxed breathing—or extending the exhale longer than the inhale—can reduce stress, improve heart rate variability and support resilience. Breathwork is not a substitute for avoiding unhealthy air, but it is a simple daily practice that strengthens one of the body’s detoxification organs: the lungs.
For appropriate individuals, sauna therapy may offer additional support. Sweating may contribute modestly to eliminating certain heavy metals and persistent environmental chemicals. Regular sauna use has also been associated with cardiovascular and cognitive benefits. Adequate hydration and medical guidance are important for people with chronic medical conditions. Targeted supplements may also play a role when clinically appropriate, but they should complement—not replace—a healthy lifestyle.
