Why Vitamin D Optimization is Fundamental to our Biology

Vitamin D has long been recognized for its important role in health. Often called the “sunshine vitamin,” it’s easiest to produce naturally during our fleeting Chicago summer months when we spend more time outdoors. For those of us living in the Midwest—where many months are spent indoors with limited direct sunlight—vitamin D deficiency is especially prevalent.

The sun is the primary source of energy for nearly all life on Earth, and one of the most remarkable ways our bodies interact with it is through vitamin D. Unlike most vitamins, vitamin D is made right in our skin. When ultraviolet B rays from the sun transform a naturally occurring cholesterol precursor in our skin into vitamin D, the liver and kidneys convert it into a powerful hormone that regulates hundreds of genes throughout the body. It’s a beautiful example of how deeply our biology is woven into the natural world around us.

Vitamin D supports bone health, muscle function and immune regulation—helping the body fight infections and maintain balanced immune responses. It also plays a direct role in the brain’s production of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter involved in mood, emotional well-being and cognition. Studies involving millions of people have consistently shown that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of numerous adverse health outcomes. In the area of brain health, large population studies have found that individuals with deficient vitamin D levels have a significantly higher risk of developing dementia.

While sunscreen is essential for preventing skin cancer, a recent large clinical trial found that daily high-SPF sunscreen use significantly lowered vitamin D levels and increased deficiency by about one third—a reminder that consistent sunscreen users may benefit from monitoring their levels.

One reason vitamin D remains controversial is that large supplementation studies have produced mixed results. But these studies often overlook a critical principle: one size doesn’t fit all. Many trials don’t check whether participants were deficient beforehand, use a single fixed dose for everyone and rarely adjust dosing to achieve optimal blood levels.

In our new era of personalized medicine, it’s becoming clear that our vitamin D needs are highly individualized. Genetics, skin pigmentation, geographic location, age, body weight and time spent outdoors all contribute to wide differences in vitamin D status. When supplementing, there’s also growing insight that pairing vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 may help direct calcium into bones and away from arteries.

Rather than asking whether everyone should take the same supplement, a more meaningful question is whether each person has enough vitamin D for their unique biology. Perhaps the greatest lesson of the sunshine vitamin is that optimal health is rarely one size fits all.
